Dojo etiquette

In addition to the philosophical principles of Dojo Kun that should be applied whilst studying the art of karate, there is also an code of etiquette that should be followed when training in the dojo.

  • Show respect for the dojo by bowing and saying "Osu" on entering and leaving.
  • Address the head instructor as "Sensei" and assistant instructors as "Sempai".
  • Pay attention and do not interrupt when being addressed by an instructor.
  • Ask an instructor or higher grades for advice if required.
  • Say "Osu" upon receiving any advice or command from an instructor.
  • Show respect for your training partner by bowing and saying "Osu" after training with them.
  • Tell your instructor before the lesson if you have a injury.
  • Ask for the instructor's permission before leaving the class.
  • Keep your gi clean and in good condition.
  • Ensure your gi is correctly done up and your belt is securely tied.
  • Do not roll the sleeves or legs of your gi up to expose your knees or elbows.
  • Keep your finger and toe nails cut short.
  • Do not wear jewelry. If an item cannot be removed, it should be taped over.
  • Do not use offensive language or engage in offensive behaviour.
